I just wanted to write a review of this CD because of the song "You make the whole world cry". Tanita's first album was a big hit in the late 80's, but then her second album felt a bit dissapointing, making one fear that she is one of those artists that say all they have to say on their first album and little after that. But then came 1992 (around her third lp) and the song "You make the whole world cry". It is gorgeous. Its an epic song, and the productio and arrangements are grandiose to match it. It feels like one of thos italian pop songs of the early 70s with huge orhcestra's or one of those Phill Spector producctions or something fit of Rafael trabucchelli or Jean Bouchety. Except it has an urgency to its performance and music. Not too many people know that song. Even I found it just browsing through the discount bins. So thats why I felt obliged to write this review so you know there is such a jewel out there. And she wrote and produced it herself.
If you know the work of Tanita Tikaram, you probably think of Twist in My Sobriety first. "My eyes are just holograms"--now that's a visceral image. Well this album is full of such imagery, all communicated through the throaty voice of Tanita Tikaram--it's truly an essential.
Tanita Tikaram was very big in Norway, at the end of the 80 ths.
And as i listen to this album,my conclusion is that here voice i simple, clean, and with a cool and coldness who creeps into your soul. Here on this album you have all here hit`s. My favorite tracks is from here first album Ancient Heart, with Twist my sobriety, Cathedral song, World outside the window, and Good Tradition. This is five stars song, all along. The rest who
follows is certainly a mixed bag of songs. But here voice. And if Elvis Presely was reborn as woman, she probably would look like Tanita Tikaram. In Norway she was forgotten after here two first album, so if you can not get hold of this album, buy ancient heart.
